Wedding Flower Planning Guide

10 helpful tips when planning your wedding flowers

Gosh, you’re getting married! And suddenly the planning begins… and everyone starts asking things like:

“What’s your vision?”
“What’s your colour palette?”
“What flowers do you like?”

And you’re probably thinking… I don’t even know yet. Honestly, that’s completely normal.

Most couples I work with don’t come to me knowing exactly what flowers they want. They just know how they want their wedding to feel. And that’s actually the best place to start. Flowers really shape how a space feels. You know when you walk into a room and it just feels beautiful? Or when you see a view and everyone goes quiet for a second because it’s just… wow. Flowers can create moments like that.

So I’ve put together a few simple tips to help you start thinking about your flowers, your style, and how they might shape the atmosphere of your day - without it feeling overwhelming, I promise!

1. Think about the feeling you want

Before choosing specific flowers, think about the overall feeling you want your wedding to have. Romantic? Relaxed? Fun? Retro? Boho?

Flowers have this amazing way of setting the tone of a space. A bit like when you walk into a beautiful room and instantly feel calm - you might not even know why, but you just feel it!

2. Let the season guide your flowers

Have a look at what flowers are naturally in season around the time of your wedding and see what you’re drawn to. And of course, your florist will be able to guide you towards beautiful options that work perfectly for your date.

3. Focus on the areas that matter most

You really don’t need flowers everywhere. Instead, think about the places where moments actually happen.

Where guests arrive.
Where you walk down the aisle.
Where everyone gathers to eat, chat and celebrate.

A few beautiful arrangements in the right places can completely change how a space feels.

Sometimes it’s not about having more flowers - it’s about placing them intentionally where people naturally pause and take things in.

That’s how we work at Muse and Petal!

4. Your bouquet should feel like you

Your bouquet is one of the most personal parts of the day.

It’s in your hands, in your photos, and it kind of becomes part of your whole look.

Some people love something bold and modern. Others love something softer and a little bit wilder.

There’s no right answer - it just needs to feel like you.

5. Ceremony flowers can often be reused

Many ceremony arrangements can be moved into the reception space afterwards. It’s a lovely way to let your flowers continue through the day and make the most of them in different parts of your celebration. This is something I always consider for my couples - re-purposing flowers!

6. Colour palettes don't need to be exact

Lots of people feel like they need loads of colours for their wedding flowers but often the most beautiful designs start with just one or two colours you really love. Then you explore the tones within it.

Soft lilacs with caramel tones.
Greens layered with different shades and textures.
Whites with creamy, buttery tones running through.

Working with tones of one or two colours creates a really considered, modern look. It feels intentional, thought out and really makes an impact!

7. Think about the venue space

Your venue will naturally influence what works best.

The size of the space, the lighting, even how people move through the room - all of these things can shape the type of floral designs that will look and feel right there.

8. Trust your florist's creativity

Pinterest can be a great place to gather inspiration.

But the most beautiful wedding flowers usually happen when you allow your florist a little creative freedom too. That’s when designs become completely unique to you and your wedding - rather than something copied from somewhere else.

9. Flowers are about atmosphere, not just decoration

Flowers aren’t just decoration. They really shape how a space feels.

You know that moment when guests walk into a room and someone says “wow, this looks beautiful”? Flowers often play a big part in that. They bring personality into the space.

10. Start conversations early

Florists can book up well in advance, especially during busy wedding seasons.

So it’s always a good idea to start the conversation early and check availability for your date.

Even if you’re still figuring things out - that’s completely fine.
